he sight of an adorable kitten or puppy
in a pet store or city shelter is often enough to make us pull out our checkbooks and sign the adoption papers. But too often that hasty decision leads to disappointment and regret. Many pets end up being aban- doned because they don't fit in with their owners' lifestyles. When that happens, both the pets and the people suffer.
To ensure a loving and lasting relationship with your pet, choose wisely. Use your head, not your heart; consider the kind of pet best suited to the way you live, your home envi- ronment and your family needs. And while you're thinking about choices, don't limit your options to cats and dogs. For some people, birds, fish, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters make more sense as pets because these ani- mals usually are easier to care for.
