书里每一个病人都有一个属于自己的故事，但是每一个病人的故事都不是被完整的直接叙述出来的。作者不停地在故事间切换。所以每一个故事的表现形式都是“故事碎片”--用来表现一战中士兵们严重的精神创伤及破碎的mentality。这本书是很一本很典型的现实主义创作。其中很多引用都是历史记载中真实的材料。作者在写作过程中努力地模仿及映射历史。但是书中波动起伏非常少，从头读到尾只是觉得很压抑，触动却不大，除了临近结尾对一位医生使用电疗法过程的令人有些震撼的描述。

Pat Barker was born in Thornaby-on-Tees in 1943. She was educated at the London School of Economics and has been a teacher of history and politics.

Her books include the highly acclaimed Regeneration trilogy Regeneration ; The Eye in the Door , winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize; and The Ghost Road , winner of the Booker Prize; as well as seven other novels. Pat Barker is married and lives in Durham, England.
