The late Guy Mountfort was a founder of the Worldwide Fund for Nature and his outstanding portrayals of the wildlife and wilderness of Asia and Africa have been rightly acclaimed. He died in 2003 aged 97. His text has been updated, and a new introduction written, by leading Indian naturalist and conservationist Hashim Tyabji. Gerald Cubitt is one of the world's leading natural history photographers. The images in Wild India were specially commissioned for the book.
Long renowned for its wild places and remarkably rich natural history, India remains one of the world's greatest wildlife destinations. The sheer range of landscapes and habitats make this an unrivalled place to seek out animals as exciting as the tiger, elephant and leopard, as well as a host of other, less well-known species. From the ice caps of the Himalaya to the lush rainforests of the south, the varied landscapes are home to a great diversity of wildlife. However, population pressures are intense and India's rapid rate of modernisation is prompting a range of pressing conservation concerns. The different types of landscape, and the flora and fauna they support, are all examined in this revised and updated new edition, alongside conservation issues. Text originally written by the late Guy Mountfort has been expanded and updated by current experts on Indian landscape, wildlife and environmental protection. Illustrated with over 200 spectacular colour photographs, this book is a celebration of India's natural heritage.
