Bio-engineering has come a long way from the days of bionic super-heroes on television. Rakhorst (biomedical engineering, University Medical Center, Groningen, The Netherlands) and his colleagues discuss various aspects of this phenomenon, medical, scientific and ethical. They point out how important it is for doctors and bio-engineers to have a common vocabulary and a clear understanding of what the other is doing.
