The United States, Germany, and Japan are the three most important countries in the international economic system. They have pursued very different, sometimes conflicting, monetary and exchange rate policies, however, which has undermined international monetary cooperation among them. The policy differences arise, this book explains, from differences within each country in the relationship between private banks and industrial corporations, on the one hand, and in the independence of the national central bank, on the other.

'Currencies and Politics' is the first comprehensive, in-depth comparison of the institutions and processes that formulate domestic and external monetary policy in the United States, Germany, and Japan. This volume outlines the differences in policymaking among the three countries and the policy patterns they produced over the postwar period.
