我一輩子都會記得我讀過這麼無聊的一本書。但是當我兩個月後再重新翻開那一段老太太的epiphany時竟禁不住淚流滿麵。一個人一生都隻能依靠彆人纔能滿足自己難填的欲望，不得不說是一種悲哀。

帕特裏剋·懷特（Patrick White 1912—1990）　澳大利亞小說傢、劇作傢，1973年獲諾貝爾文學奬。著有《人類之樹》、《福斯》、《堅固的曼陀羅》、《活體解剖者》、《風暴眼》等長篇小說和劇本《撒爾沙季節》、《快樂的靈魂》、《禿山之夜》等。

懷特的作品明顯為神秘主義、象徵主義和現代心理分析學說所影響。他善於運用意識流的手法，大跨度地將情節與人物內心活動編織在一起，細緻而深刻地描繪人物的內在世界。他的小說大多篇幅浩瀚、用詞冷僻。瑞典學院評價他為“一位社會批評傢，正如一切名副其實的真正作傢一樣，他主要通過寫人來批評社會”。
