Since its original publication fifteen years ago, this hugely influential book has been at the centre of much debate. 那些用於劃分社會的概念，比如“階級”，並非先在於人們的社會實踐，也不是任何意義上的“固定”的推進社會發展的內在動力。一個社會以什麼樣的形式被劃分，是政治過程的結果，也是作者所謂的hegemony。當劃分顯得太過混雜，hegemony就結束瞭。（想女權運動、種族問題、環境運動、全球公民社會——把一個想象意義上的“工人階級”切得七零八落。）這書既是對“本質主義”的批判，也是對“多元主義”的批判。這是我的一點粗淺的理解。最後關於左派學者應該做什麼，沒太看懂。是說因為hegemony滲透至社會的每一個角落，所以不管社會運動是反資本還是反男權還是反環境汙染，左派學者都得想辦法去make sense咩？

评分當福柯與葛蘭西相遇，本質主義就消失瞭，隨之消失的還有整個第二、第三國際（包括葛蘭西自己）的教條。隻有當這些都消失之後，開放、不確定的社會概念纔能重迴視野，對抗性纔能重新定位，hegemony所蘊含的解放潛能纔能重新發掘。在我看來，這些觀點比死守著資本論那一套來得有趣得多（望嚮某地理學傢）。
