On a windy spring day in the Chilterns, the calm, organized life of science writer Joe Rose is shattered when he witnesses a tragic accident: a hot-air balloon with a boy trapped in its basket is being tossed by the wind, and in the attempt to save the child, a man is killed. A stranger named Jed Parry joins Rose in helping to bring the balloon to safety. But unknown to Rose, something passes between Parry and himself on that day--something that gives birth to an obsession in Parry so powerful that it will test the limits of Rose's beloved rationalism, threaten the love of his wife, Clarissa, and drive him to the brink of murder and madness. Brilliant and compassionate, this is a novel of love, faith, and suspense, and of how life can change in an instant.

Ian McEwan is such a fantastic storyteller, with such a "fluid" way of writing. <cement garden> is sth cult and dark, Ian is daring enough to disclose all those fine details of a long-lasting nightmare. But in <enduring love>, readers may have many ways of interpretation. Story going like a heavy fluid, and I was fascinated by how Ian delivered the story in a semi-detached tone--a full range 3-D view--in a time scale of days. "seeing is NOT believing" is what I've been resonated to most. This kind of "philosophy" is what's been long rooted in oriental culture, or at least sth I suspect about buddhism (though it may takes a while for me to source for the quote). Everybody is living in their own world of perception, and solitude is inevitable. I was completely shocked by the letter Clarissa wrote to Joe: being logic and being right is in fact ruining their love. The ending is a big punch, and seemingly warmified the entire story. Anyway we are living in a world that is not so bad, separately or collectively, shedding a light of human nature at everybody's face.... And McEwan is such a knowledgeable person and I was superised by his immense collection of knowledge. If he'd not been a writer, he'd be a great researcher in either science or art...

作为学院派,作者的几个主题,理性,科学,真相,视角之类的,都看得出受到西方主流学院思想影响(don't know if i'm doing justice to the author, though..).
