伯纳德特这本书提到他的老师施特劳斯的次数不多。即使是施特劳斯，对理解《理想国》的细节也没有太大的帮助。这使得评估施特劳斯的贡献变得困难。至于伯纳德特这本书：它是为数不多有用的二手著作，但是从卷二开始就再没能跟上柏拉图的论证主线。
