1930年出生于美国纽约。作为爱尔兰裔，4岁举家迁回爱尔兰，在贫民窟度过苦难的童年。13岁辍学。19岁心怀“美国梦”只身重返纽约，做过酒店勤杂工、码头工人、打字员，当过兵，后来考入大学，毕业后成为一名教师，前后教过12000多名学生，曾荣获美国教育界的最高荣誉称号“全美最佳教师”，被誉为“老师中的老师”。1987年退休，开始正式写作。2006年，被授予“约翰•杜威教育奖”。2009年6月，病逝于纽约。
