Ian McEwan is a critically acclaimed author of short stories and novels for adults, as well as The Daydreamer, a children's novel illustrated by Anthony Browne. His first published work, a collection of short stories, First Love, Last Rites, won the Somerset Maugham Award. His other award-winning novels are The Child in Time, which won the 1987 Whitbread Novel of the Year Award, and Amsterdam, which won the 1998 Booker Prize.

On the hottest day of the summer of 1934, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, her childhood friend who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have been changed for ever. 评分2010.8.20 本來想睡覺，後來還是想一鼓作氣看完算瞭。雖然早就知道結局，看到最後一頁仍是傷心不已，眼淚婆娑。電影改編算是很成功——除瞭結尾，我覺得電影裏沒有的書中結尾那個小孩演戲的一幕很好，雖然匠氣太深，但是充滿震撼，並且tie up the ends。中間戰爭的場麵不是我的茶，看得有氣無力的。整個小說缺乏傑作的氣勢，但是不乏一個當下優秀小說傢的style & taste. 文筆可圈可點，雖然有的地方有點too mouthful. 我很喜歡這個主題，相當有深度。感覺寫作上應該是把很多寫作筆記段落piece together, 最終定下的選角度算是一個非常clever idea. 作傢的自我剖析應該是寫作圈的人比較愛看的東西，在寫作上也是手法多變，有點像行內人寫給行內人把玩的小品。受眾應該在作傢(or writers-to-be)圈。
