评分這本書是我的文學啓濛。Henry James是我永遠的文學英雄，他的Isabel也永遠是我心目中的自由女性典範: 她承擔瞭追尋自由的苦果，戴上瞭陰謀的荊棘冠。她生活在幻想的英國和歐洲文明迷夢裏，然而她在海外結識的歐洲化美國僑民隻想算計她的遺産，沒有絲毫貴族風範。但即使如此，Isabel把她的理想立住瞭，堅持到最後都沒有背信棄義。她的行為無可挑剔，這樣的風範成就瞭鍍金時代的美國戰勝老歐洲。
