Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920s, The Painted Veil is the story of the beautiful but love-starved Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to accompany him to the heart of a cholera epidemic. Stripped of the British society of her youth and the small but effective society she fought so hard to attain in Hong Kong, she is compelled by her awakening conscience to reassess her life and learn how to love.
The Painted Veil is a beautifully written affirmation of the human capacity to grow, to change, and to forgive.
作者簡介
W.薩默塞特·毛姆（WilliamSomersetMaugham），1874—1965，英國著名小說傢，劇作傢，散文傢。曾先後就讀於坎特伯雷的國王學校和德國海德堡大學，後到倫敦聖托馬斯醫院學醫，並取得外科醫師資格。 他的首部長篇小說《蘭貝斯的麗莎》於1897年發錶。1915年，他的傑作《人性的枷鎖》問世，1919年《月亮與六便士》的齣版確立瞭他作為長篇小說傢的地位。他的其他著作有長篇小說《刀鋒》、《麵紗》，旅行劄記《在中國屏風上》，及各種散文、短篇小說集等。1903—1933年期間，他創作瞭近30部劇本，深受觀眾歡迎。 毛姆被公認為20世紀在全世界範圍內流行最廣、最受歡迎的英國作傢之一，被譽為“最會講故事的作傢”。他的小說機智、幽默，常在譏諷中潛藏對人性的憐憫與同情。1952年，牛津大學授予他名譽博士學位。1954年，英王授予他“榮譽侍從”的稱號。

Facing the death and transience of human lives,the vain and flippant woman dropped her old self and found her capacity of love and affection at last.
评分她不愛他，一秒鍾都沒有愛過。就算他再善良，再虔誠，就算他再怎麼愛她，她也不曾心動過。——嗯，高尚的品德並不足以成為一個人被愛的理由。（幸好電影把結局改瞭，雖然依舊很虐，起碼Norton飾演的Walter沒那麼可憐……）
