When Walt Whitman self-published his Leaves of Grass in July 1855, he altered the course of literary history. One of the greatest masterpieces of American literature, it redefined the rules of poetry while describing the soul of the American character.
Throughout his great career, Whitman continuously revised, expanded, and republished Leaves of Grass, but as Harold Bloom reminds us, the book that matters most is the 1855 original. 评分對詩歌抱有的敬畏之心，皆天分不足。況且惠特曼不是迷人的詩人，他的熱情高亢和現實關懷，我都不感親近。更重要的，詩歌到底是一點還是一綫，該執著一詞一句，還是綱領，實在睏惑不已。
