Rickie Elliot, a sensitive and intelligent young man with an intense imagination and a certain amount of literary talent, sets out from Cambridge full of hopes to become a writer. 福斯特（Forster，E.M.，1879-1970），英国著名小说家和批评家。出生在伦敦，少年时期在特恩布里奇公学上学，成年后进入剑桥大学国王学院，后成为该院的荣誉研究员，被认为是英国二十世纪最杰出的小说家和批评家。作品有《天使不敢涉足的地方》（1905）、《最漫长的旅程》（1907）、《一间看得见风景的房间》（1908）、《霍华德庄园》（1910）、《印度之行》（1924）和去世后出版的《莫里斯》（1971）；还有两个短篇小说集，以及广受欢迎的文学批评专著《小说面面观》（1927）。他的作品既有完整的故事，又富有象征手法，因此一直拥有广大的读者群，并有四部小说改编成为电影，为他赢得了广泛的声誉。
