作者用“新自由主义上台反而是因为左翼太强”作为噱头，一口气比较了英美德法四大国的不同新自由主义（或新自由主义失败）的异同之处。关于税制问题可见/不可见到利用这种可见性迎合选举政治的讨论，左派运动（工会/消费者运动）如何未曾预料地为新自由主义的私有化/反监管/出售公共福利铺上垫脚石，都耐人寻味。总而言之，作者反对把新自由主义看做预先设计好的宏大理念计划，反之将其作为政治互动中的创新与取舍，必须引入制度分析才能看得更为透彻。（对政治背景了解太少，读起来时常为自己的知识储备捉急啊）

作者从制度运行的角度去看新自由主义和政治行动（经济学家如何被政治家借用，大众如何坠入政治家口中的“新自由主义”，政治家预料外的影响因素如何推进现实），很有说服力。看历史社会学的书很容易有知识上的满足，但要多用些力才能有理论上的满足。

经济与市场主题的另一切入点。当斯特兰奇告诉我们应该重视谈判，重视不同的政治经济结构时。普拉萨德告诉我们民意是怎样被历史所塑造，政客又是怎样通过政治结构利用民意，推行有利于自己在位的新自由主义改革，当然是偶然而不彻底的。但长期来看，三十年河东过去了，三十年河西呢？民粹回潮和黄马甲之后呢？
