A perceptive friend who visited us in Dooneen expressed
some admiration for the life we had developed here, but added
to me: "You could never do this without Mary." It is true of
our farming operations and perhaps even more true of the
writing of this book. It is the story of a mutual experience; I
cannot say which ideas are my wife s and which are mine.
Our Irish friends and neighbors have been vastly kind and
patient in teaching us about rural Ireland. Of the approxi-
mately 1,2oo people in our parish there are few, if any, to whom
we are not in some way indebted.
