谈的话题很广泛，不过很多小节都比较粗糙，基本上一个话题就3-4页。最后一章论民国抗日的，大陆只有《中国人》全译本有收录。全书英文简洁明快，颇得英美小品文之精髓，也是典型的林语堂散文风格。多年以后二刷，还是很值得一读的。
