談的話題很廣泛，不過很多小節都比較粗糙，基本上一個話題就3-4頁。最後一章論民國抗日的，大陸隻有《中國人》全譯本有收錄。全書英文簡潔明快，頗得英美小品文之精髓，也是典型的林語堂散文風格。多年以後二刷，還是很值得一讀的。
