This title includes a reading guide. After years teaching Romantic poetry at the Technical University of Cape Town, David Lurie, middle-aged and twice divorced, has an impulsive affair with a student. The affair sours; he is denounced and summoned before a committee of inquiry. Willing to admit his guilt, but refusing to yield to pressure to repent publicly, he resigns and retreats to his daughter Lucy's isolated smallholding. For a time, his daughter's influence and the natural rhythms of the farm promise to harmonize his discordant life. But the balance of power in the country is shifting. He and Lucy become victims of a savage and disturbing attack which brings into relief all the faultlines in their relationship.

评分becoming the dog || 干净！但这干净隐约散着血肉模糊的气息。结构精致又带一点杂乱：不少words/phrases（尤其是fire, enriched, smell等）在后文delicately重现多重disgrace互相嵌套；Byron的故事贯穿始终但具有流动感。一个老去男人面对年轻女子作为父亲和爱人两个角色间踌躇的状态；两个种族/社会阶层/道德定义/文化对峙时的失语状态；对原始性冲动本能的崇敬、畏惧、困惑、耻辱层层迭起的互相推攘状态等等都被漂亮地capture了并悬在多次出现的silence中等待裁决。而裁决之过程，伴随着indifference和ultimate longing for love最终迎来了nothingness/despair/surrender.

评分Only great writers like Coetzee can write about disgrace in a manner both graceful and cruel for us common readers. Included in this tiny novel is the human nature that goes beyond what happens in South Africa, a kind of fate or "blessing" that both counts as grace and disgrace to the flawed mortals.
