一本挺有意思的小书(据说也相当流行&影响力很大)。用经济学思维方式看政治过程,以及整合两种视角的尝试,把exit和voice作为行为者并立的两种选择。更关键在于,voice在何时成为exit的补充和替代,为什么;exit的存在能让voice的效果更强吗;在何种情况下哪一个机制会胜出;两种机制并存是更优解吗。Institution腐化的可能性有一万种,optimal mix只在风中。另本书绝佳展示了大牛是如何挖坑的,一切不论,问题意识本身席卷社会心理学、政党政治、劳动经济学、公共品提供、消费者厂商各大领域,足够养活一票学者了。

评分永恒的命题,短小精悍的书,看似简单的几个概念之间很复杂的interaction,经济理论与政治理论的交互融合。非常insightful也非常relevant,有空码个笔记。

艾伯特·O.赫希曼,1915年生于德国柏林。1941年移民美国,先后在伯克利、耶鲁、哈佛从事研究和教学工作,1974年加入普林斯顿大学高级研究所。赫希曼一生著述颇丰,以英语出版的著作有14部,以其他语言出版的有10部,大多数著作被译成多国语言,如《经济发展战略>)被译成十多国语言。
An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, "exit," is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, "voice," is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change "from within." The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, "having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of 'unhappy' top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little."
