个人以为一流的科学史论点有两大特点：一是要研究具体的material processes而不是形而上的conceptual genealogy，二是要展现一种高度相互勾连的历史场域、挖掘出那些被遮掩的底层联系（比如“听”与“说”，“主观”与“客观”，“身体”与“存在”）。栗山的这本书两方面做的都很棒，再加上合理的结构和轻快的文笔，算相当难得的作品。中、西（希）医学的比较研究当然有固化“传统”的硬伤，但是如果完全不从“传统”的大尺度进行考察，又能怎样去研究“听”、“看”、“说”这种脱离小地方的大问题？

栗山茂久（Shigehisa Kuriyama）教授是哈佛大學科學史博士，曾在京都的國際日本文化研究中心講學與研究多年，專攻比較醫學史。大約三年前栗山教授被哈佛大學挖墙角，目前任教於東亞系與科學史系主任、赖肖尔文化史讲座教授。
