条理清晰：围绕educational desire,从文化政治经济，从地方、国家、东亚、世界，逐次展开。可读完也没觉得解释了为什么中国人，邹平人这么热衷教育？描述现象是相对简单的，找到现象背后的原因就太难了，可能就在于社会现象的原因是复杂的，多元相互作用的吧。

这本书，作者用比较boring（听人语）的感觉写了我们熟悉的学校、学习的场景，历史化地见证如何进行的学习规范的规训。

简读，放到了自己的文献综述中。首先要致敬一个外国学者研究中国教育的好奇心与热情，对邹平这个地方教育人情的观察也很独特，个人以为他的观点其实还是教育文化学取向的，将家长对教育的重视理解为一种现代化的文化模式，即家长相信好的教育可以帮助子女获得优质中产阶层生活甚至是国外一流美好生活这种设想本质上是现代化的一种文化模型，在后发现代性国家，国家、市场、学校话语共同发挥作用塑造了这一文化，而在中国，传统儒家尊师重教的话语进一步加强了这种文化，至少这本书不再是国内很多研究将家长视为罪魁祸首相关研究的重复，多重话语、力量的规训倒是值得借鉴。还在等待其他对中国重教的解释

作者开宗名义，为何在读书并不一定在经济上更有利的时代，中国人的教育意愿仍然如此强烈。作者提出在总体性社会事实中对其进行考察（没错就是莫斯的概念！），通过文化、governing（不只是政府自上而下的管理，参考福柯的权力之网）和emplacement（既扎根邹平，又放眼全国东亚全世界）进行考察。提出中国人的教育意愿是由快速工业化，人口结构转型，文化男子气概，国家建设和典型表彰这几方面互相纠缠互为因果的。个人感觉第四章有身体化部分的描写是亮点。缺憾是感觉desire这个词可以好好做下理论分析的但作者没有，素质教育部分不如某个我忘记名字的人写得好。
