本书从"elite school – St. Paul's"出发，讲述了美国精英阶层如果假借"meritocracy"之名实现阶层的再生产与不平等的延续。从方法上来讲，最后一部分的reflection很受用，深刻探讨了ethnography 如何通过embedded and relational experience来理解社会互动以及日常生活。作者采用多种定性研究方法，深入研究对象，以小见大，体察现象背后社会结构的作用机制。从理论上来说，本书延续布迪厄理论的传统，巧妙地将cultural capital应用于当代、美国社会，强调distinction不再是掌握high-brow的知识，而是embody cultural omnivorousness以及ease。写作上，语言生动有趣。

还是很耐读的，纯粹作为印证个人印象，多有拍案叫绝的段落，呵呵。

非常的主流（未必是褒义）但故事非常生动（写作加一星），很容易理解这本书为什么那么火。但仔细一想就觉得其实理论贡献挺薄弱的。“文化杂食”作为新的“区隔”形式早就被Bryson这些学者讨论过了。对于身体的讨论还略算有点新意但还是在布迪厄的理论框架之下，更像是应用而非改进理论。最搞笑的是讲性别那一章唯一引用的性别学者是巴特勒, 反而几乎没有引用那些在巴特勒之前就从表演的角度来理解性别的社会学家(Goffman, West & Zimmerman) 。文中讨论的男女生在青春期对于性的不同体验Karen Martin在90年代就指出来了，同样没有被引用。

西莫斯·可汗，哥伦比亚大学的社会学系教授，研究方向为文化社会学、社会分层和精英文化。他是圣保罗中学的毕业生，也曾在该中学任教。著有《特权：圣保罗中学的精英教育》和《研究的实践：社会学学者如何答疑》等。
