读中文版时候感觉毛姆讲得是梦想，而读英文版才察觉到stickland所呈现的一种带有原始、野蛮的本质力量的生命状态，他的真实从下半身开始，具体，野蛮，性感，无遮拦，回到了最原始的关于身体的叙述。

好像一时很难阐述自己的感受

读过一本毛姆的短篇小说集，一个非常擅长说故事的作家。但是这本长篇前半部分还是读的非常艰难（一半因为几百年没读英文书了，另一边因为都是在飞行时间看的，非常容易睡着）。但是Strickland从法国到大溪地之后确实不忍心放下来，借伍尔芙说的，确实像在自己平庸的生活中迎面撞上了一座巨大的冰山。毛姆的确聪明、幽默又克制，赞美毛姆。

Strickland如果不是靠Blanche的护理早就病死了，不是靠Ata养也不会在最后几年过得那么惬意继而达成艺术理想了。很震撼于这种为艺术献身和拉他人牺牲的人性。
