觀察細緻入微，描寫入木三分。筆下除瞭善良、熱情、真誠，也有醜惡、平庸、虛僞，但艾略特對這一切都報以同情和寬容。"People are almost always better than their neighbors think they are."

An experimental — yet exceedingly beautiful and moving — pursuit of the ultimate good intertwined with marriage and politics. With her pilgrimage towards the good, her detest of wealth and her neighborly love — to love and be loved — Dorothea is rightfully compared with Teresa or Virgin Mary. True good do exist and the saint lives among us. 偉大到失語。

喬治艾略特可能是20世紀之前英國最好的女性作傢瞭，尤其擅長描寫善惡參半的人物(Casaubon，Bulstrode)，甚至對Dorothea等主要正麵人物的性格缺陷和弱點也分析地很細膩。作品的婚戀觀還是很傳統，不太符閤我個人的閱讀趣味，但佩服文本中體現的思辨能力和駕馭宏大場景的水平。對醫學等相關知識的書寫在當時的女性作品中較為少見，如果活在當代艾略特應該是很好的學者……而且艾略特的作品中透露齣一種宗教的悲憫和命運感，一種人文主義宗教觀的傾嚮。

以下是看完比较印象深刻的几点： 1、全书最喜欢的一个人物，高思太太。她有一种罕见的理性，善于识别什么是不可改变的，因而毫无怨言地服从了事。在高思先生因为担保而损失一笔还蛮重要的钱之后，高思太太第一反应不是歇斯底里、埋怨，而是想解决办法，这件事过后再进行教育。...
