How can a man be said always to inspire the widsom and intellect of his male partner, like those noble ancient Greeks? Bosie was ruining Oscar Wilde's talent. He was whimsical and spoiled. It is easy to conclude Bosie's ill humor as by-product of his parents‘ personality, but his major role in Wilde's destruction was most regrettable.

奥斯卡·王尔德（Oscar Wilde，1854 -1900），英国著名才子、诗人及戏剧家。行文演论无不智趣横生，卓绝才情颠倒众生后世。代表作有小说《道林·格雷的画像》，剧本《莎乐美》等，散文以骇世之作《自深深处》最为著名。其短暂一生精彩无比却充满波折。1895年因“有伤风化”获罪入狱。狱中断续写就给情人波西的一封动人长信，即其死后五年得以发表的《自深深处》。

译者朱纯深，英国诺丁汉大学博士，宋淇翻译研究论文纪念奖三届得主，学术著作有《翻译探微》等。现执教于香港城市大学中文、翻译及语言学系，兼任《中国翻译》编委及《英语世界》顾问等。

De Profundis is Wilde's eloquent and bitter reproach from prison to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. He contrasts his behaviour with that of his close friend Robert Ross who became Wilde's literary executor. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a deeply moving and characteristically generous poem on the horrors of prison life, which was published anonymously in 1898. This collection also includes the essay The Soul of Man under Socialism and two of his Platonic dialogues, The Decay of Lying and The Critic as Artist.
