Namier-Butterfield-Pocock的史學史問題隨處可見，“自由”問題則明顯展露齣Berlin觀念的過量溢齣。頗受前代影響的學術關懷，也許纔是Skinner總是拋棄處於顯著地位的清教-神學論爭，而換之以所謂“新羅馬”的真實原因。

斯金納的故事和內容與波考剋分析英國革命的部分大體一緻，不過相比波考剋挖掘現代政治容納“特殊性”的宏大理論野心而言，斯金納更像一個講故事的老者。斯金納延續瞭他在《霍布斯與共和主義自由》中的分析套路，並將共和派的哲學立場追溯到馬基雅維利——在分析共和派的立場時，馬基雅維利的引文都會準點齣場。不過，從學者的分析看，他對馬基雅維利闡釋並不成功，彌爾頓和哈靈頓的原始文本也很難支持他的分析。

Liberty before Liberalism is based on Quentin Skinner's Inaugural Lecture as Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Cambridge, delivered in November 1997. Professor Skinner has been awarded the Balzan Prize Life Time Achievement Award for Political Thought, History and Theory.
