Placing meanings of health and disease at the center of modern Chinese consciousness, Ruth Rogaski reveals how hygiene became a crucial element in the formulation of Chinese modernity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Rogaski focuses on multiple manifestations across time of a single Chinese concept, weisheng—which has been rendered into English as "hygiene," "sanitary," "health," or "public health"—as it emerged in the complex treaty-port environment of Tianjin. Before the late nineteenth century, weisheng was associated with diverse regimens of diet, meditation, and self-medication. Hygienic Modernity reveals how meanings of weisheng, with the arrival of violent imperialism, shifted from Chinese cosmology to encompass such ideas as national sovereignty, laboratory knowledge, the cleanliness of bodies, and the fitness of races: categories in which the Chinese were often deemed lacking by foreign observers and Chinese elites alike.

评分嗯其实这本书比《再造病人》更历史一些，故事的场所更凝聚。所述内容已经远超过城市史。
评分初看觉得只是discourse analysis，觉得没劲儿而罗嗦；看到后来觉得一些小故事有趣，且启发人对于“卫生”观念在个人生活中地位的思考。“卫生”作为现代性的重要一环，如何通过帝国主义引进，又如何在传教士、医师、政府、知识分子等社会精英的利用与争辩中，成为了健康之宝、救国之道、富强法门和统治工具。值得进一步思考的是，一个discourse如何成为我们现代人心中根深蒂固、仿佛是与生俱来般的观念(notion/idea)、习惯乃至生活方式。
