又一位美國記者對當下中國的記實筆錄。與何偉三部麯相比，本書更為切近當下（2010-2016），著眼於中國經濟文化發展水平最高的上海，追溯跨度最長（前後四五十年），社會問題更敏感尖銳（強拆，傳銷，文革，上山下鄉，宗教，戶籍製度）。作者雖竭力剋製，但依然能看齣較為強硬的批判態度。
