不知道不瞭解肖斯塔科維奇生平和音樂的人讀著是什麼感覺。不太懂這樣腦補有什麼意思。充滿瞭“我剛發現一個大道理必須講給你聽”的感覺。但是要為第190頁（Knopf版）對 irony 的觀察加一星。

把心提到嗓子眼讀完全本以前聽the Jazz album的時候開玩笑說覺得這張又皮又布爾喬亞打開書讀到肖斯塔科維奇的經曆時候纔纔覺得心焦集權體製下的音樂傢作品不能發錶職業生涯岌岌可危終日惶恐擔心自己會被帶走而消失縱然恐懼畏縮心理狀態逐漸崩壞終其一生還是想要維護傢人希望音樂能成為拯救自己的救贖者始終對自己鍾愛的音樂抱有熱誠這樣的coward覺得也非常勇敢

蘇黎世轉機買的，飛機上讀完。字詞考究、機智揶揄，寫的暢快淋灕全是反話，有一種天啊你居然懂哎！之感，想笑之餘想想啞然。黑瞭很多人包括蘇聯首長、薩特、美國人道主義者，哲思議論精彩、想法敘述可信，但沒有感受那麼深切的心理摺磨，一需要寫心理就有點抽離開始抒情。可能作者也不能夠relive那種痛苦吧。總覺這種介於傳記和小說之中的文體再那麼一抒情就有點像同人文????

Julian Patrick Barnes is a contemporary English writer of postmodernism in literature. He has been shortlisted three times for the Man Booker Prize--- Flaubert's Parrot (1984), England, England (1998), and Arthur & George (2005), and won the prize for The Sense of an Ending (2011). He has written crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh.

Following an education at the City of London School and Merton College, Oxford, he worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary. Subsequently, he worked as a literary editor and film critic. He now writes full-time. His brother, Jonathan Barnes, is a philosopher specialized in Ancient Philosophy.

He lived in London with his wife, the literary agent Pat Kavanagh, until her death on 20 October 2008.

And though a stroke of luck prevents him from becoming yet another casualty of the Great Terror, for decades to come he will be held fast under the thumb of despotism: made to represent Soviet values at a cultural conference in New York City, forced into joining the Party and compelled, constantly, to weigh appeasing those in power against the integrity of his music.

Barnes elegantly guides us through the trajectory of Shostakovitch's career, at the same time illuminating the tumultuous evolution of the Soviet Union.
