SPQR：元老院與羅馬人民。劍橋大學Mary Beard教授講述瞭從羅穆盧斯的王國時期到帝國時期的卡拉卡拉敕令之間接近韆年的政治史演變。從小白的角度來看，作者對羅馬史主流敘事的一些質疑有理有據。

從Romulus到Caracalla，國王（酋邦）時代到共和體製，內戰後迎接Caesar的時代，最終在羅馬公民改革中戛然而止。可讀性非常強的專欄曆史。皇帝個性的差異隻會影響少數精英人群，而與屠戮僅一綫之隔的平民生活理應更有曆史研究的價值。作者圍繞SPQR有意避開連篇纍牘的帝王傳記，轉而展開羅馬人民和社會底層的敘述，可惜曆史終究是勝利者和統治者書寫的，相關的史料隻在三四個章節中涵蓋，關於元老院本身的描繪也比預期少瞭很多。
