簡單說，就是一本講述中國的煙草接受史。從明末開始說到現代，煙草從一個外來的變成本土的商品，並且完全融入了中國社會（其實從這一角度，可以看見中國從明末到現代的消費方面的轉變，也因此可說這本書也在講述中國近代消費史）。書中指出各個時代的人如何看待煙草，以及不同類型的煙草產品。然後也指出不同的社群因為經濟、社會與文化條件等，而對於煙草有不同的態度與偏好。其實還有兩章跳過了（分別是女性吸煙問題和文學中的煙草形象，之後會重看這部分）。史料來源方面很多，可見作者用心。

From the long-stemmed pipe to snuff, the water pipe, hand-rolled cigarettes, and finally, manufactured cigarettes, the history of tobacco in China is the fascinating story of a commodity that became a hallmark of modern mass consumerism. Carol Benedict follows the spread of Chinese tobacco use from the sixteenth century, when it was introduced to China from the New World, through the development of commercialized tobacco cultivation, and to the present day. Along the way, she analyzes the factors that have shaped China’s highly gendered tobacco cultures, and shows how they have evolved within a broad, comparative world-historical framework.
