現代主體是有情的主體，而現代民族-國傢的建成則是基於民胞物與式同情。近代中國的愛情話語是殖民現代性的産物，經曆瞭儒教、啓濛和革命情感結構的三個階段：晚明以降的情教用塊莖顛覆禮教的垂直式同性交際，從馮夢龍到曹雪芹，直至文康，搖擺於特裏林的誠與真，而鴛蝶派小說的貞操觀和兒女英雄模式標誌瞭從忠孝到愛國的轉型，下啓民族主義超度情愛先聲；浪漫小說從書寫摯愛到艷遇，愛情從五四個人自由的錶達、查爾斯泰勒所謂的構成性的善轉為排除意義的日常生活；媒體醜聞迫使時人重新檢視愛與道德/真理間的辯證，戀愛手冊則將情納入知識/權力的話語中，激進無政府主義者發掘性愛以取代情愛，潘光旦等人的故事新編運用精神分析來揭櫫一個壓抑、扭麯性欲的過往；革命加戀愛的寫作公式將愛情變成階級友愛，從自然流露到錶演情感，卻不能形塑公民社會。
