寫作方麵問題不少，比較零散，行文晦澀。有的小節甚至有些文不對題（不知道是不是我沒看仔細），比如佛山霍氏那章最後一節，沒看到market體現在哪裏瞭。但老爺子寫到不少發人深省的細節，時刻提醒讀者製度法令（比如裏甲，比如地方管理和中央政權的脫節）執行的不徹底性，真正站在當時官員與平民的立場考量，非常難得。另外讀到十二章開篇，論及崇禎皇帝自縊時珠三角人民在看戲，而一個去順德赴任的官員途中聽到皇帝的消息而滿懷哀傷上任，頓時感到國傢和地方和個人之間那遙遠而又緊密的關聯，不禁深深思索國傢風雨飄搖之際個人的命運該如何。
