作者声称政治的出发点在于“敌友之分”，然而书中多谈“敌”鲜谈“友”，对霍布斯的解读大多六经注我，不及六年后的The Leviathan in the State Theory of Thomas Hobbes脚踏实地，毕竟纳粹的荒诞是施密特1938年前后才逐渐意识到的事实。

确实是刀刀见血，”but absolutely no liberal politics, only a liberal critique of politics”。施密特对自由主义的批评核心大约在于两点（1）自由主义去政治化的方案在根本上是无视最基本人性现实的幻想，作为敌我之分的政治本身是人性最核心的特征（2）欧洲公法传统的陷落直接指向了一种dehumanized的absolute enmity，更加恐怖的非人暴力恰恰是来自绝对敌意。

施米特1888年出生在德国西部的一个小镇，天主教徒，从小喜好文学、艺术、音乐、哲学、神学。在大学获得法学博士学位后，一边研究新康德主义法理学，一边写论瓦格纳的华彩文章。1916年，施米特发表了一部从政治哲学角度论诗人多伯勒的长诗《北极光》的专著，从此开始了其长达半个世纪的政治思想生涯。
