虽考察民族主义的文化性质，但作为马克思主义者，安氏论述要旨深有马主义根底：印刷资本主义，语言整合同化，殖民地精英朝圣之旅形成民族情感，民族主义相互盗版，时间空间经由文艺作品和文字论述而压缩、变成群体可理解可想象，均基于资本主义市场经济发展和殖民体系扩展。这两者决定印刷资本主义深度和殖民地与殖民中央关系、同一系列文化手段结合，影响民族主义形态：旧皇朝地区出现官式民族主义，皇朝官僚强力整合语言民族。南美洲虽有共同语言，碍于殖民时技术条件难突破广阔大陆地理区隔，缺乏母国整体想象，未形成统一南美民族主义。新兴亚非拉地区借助广电技术，想象意识传播更激烈。问题意识是为何亚洲共产政权会相互作战—亚洲共产革命适逢各国民族主义文化建构条件和技术手段成熟的年代，东南亚各国共党多少无意地继承了殖民者的建构话语。

虽然再版的时候作者自己也批判说自己欧洲中心，但不妨碍这本书各种具有启发性的判断。让我重新认识了我自己，也更明白为什么爱那片土地爱的深沉。
