E. H. Gombrich's Little History of the World, though written in 1935, has become one of the treasures of historical writing since its first publication in English in 2005. 中学历史教科书难度的历史畅销书和长销书，有多长呢，第一版其实是在二战前写完的。 作者的名气来自另外一本书，《艺术的故事》，那是一本定价近300元豆瓣评分9.6的巨著。我80年代读到的版本还是黑白的，作者的名字译作冈布里奇。 根据坊间传说，如果没有这本书的成功，也不会有人请他完成《艺术的故事》。 国内最新的版本是理想国出的，名字是《世界小史》，好像是从德文版直接译过来的。耶鲁出版社出的英文版是由他的助手翻译的。 至于要不要读，则见仁见智，我挺喜欢眼下风头颇劲的翻译家陆大鹏的答案，“我读到这本书的时候已经不年轻了，所以不觉得怎么样好。。。sorry” 至于我自己的答案：我读到这本书的时候已经不年轻了，真希望能早一些碰到它。。。
评分Gombrich的这本书是大儒写的小历史，本意是写给小朋友看的，所以文字简洁生动有趣。串讲人类历史，娓娓道来，妙趣横生。作者高深的文字功底和渊博的知识体系使得这本书看似effortlessly written，流畅自然。真正的高屋建瓴，高山仰止。历史光怪陆离，诡谲多变，但是总体来说，the history of the world is, sadly, not a pretty poem. It offers little variety, and it is nearly always the unpleasant things that are repeated, over and over again. 人类要铭记历史，吸取教训，避免在魔咒的怪圈中无法自拔。
