The first three chapters are just extraordinarily well written.

想必读此书的人都多少知道作者作为语言学家的大名，于是或许以为这书与过去的那些写作指南一样充斥着学究气息，作者的工作就是把学究气规规矩矩塞入固定的模式框架中：某某某得这样用，不能那样用……的确，例如我之前读过的《Grammatically Correct》便是这样的风格，想来大部分写作指导书亦应如此。然而，这本书好就好在跳脱了同类型书籍的死板，在一开始就指出过去那些写作书，包括是被大家公认为神书的《The Elements of Style》，都有很大的局限性，好比对语言的发展本质欠缺考虑，又好比立下一大批规则，使得人们在写作实践中只知道无脑遵循，毫无灵活性可言，实际上规则完全可以打破，只是需要足够的理由和强大的独立思考能力。作者正是要告诉我们，比任何写作指南都更为重要的是自主深入的思考过程。

前两章的确很棒，后面就有点太碎了。没有预想的那么能把心理学的东西放进来。

winter break第七本书：虽说每隔两分钟就要查下词典，但这本书给了我很多写作上的绝佳建议。而且Pinker那种又嘲讽但是又很严肃的语气让我边看边哈哈大笑。要找找Pinker的academic article细读才行。
