I admire Styron as much for being a writer par excellence as a brave warrior in the battle against his almost ineffable psychosomatic agony. This is a piece of writing so eloquently and gracefully composed, despite being ‘outlandishly macabre’, that compels me to confront my own psychical demons while moving me to the edge of belated catharsis.

Against that time, if it hasn't yet come, When I shall be scared of pain in my chest, Where the darkness shall cast its utmost sum.

前些日子在goodreads上評價了這本書，講了講這本書對我多麼重要，我實在有幸偶然間遇見這顆珍寶。沒想到Dr.M看到我的短評還擔心我。無保留，不閃躲，這本書這麼喜歡果然是因為主人公和自己很像，處處看到自己的影子，看完之後很想和作者坐下來面對面談談心，大概是書中遇知己的感覺。

美国著名作家William Styron从老年男性和艺术家的切身角度解读单相抑郁症，相当写实。从书中可见仅仅在三十年前，美国人——书中表现的是知识阶层——也羞于谈论心理疾患，更不愿意将自杀与忧郁症联系在一起。Depression到底是illness还是weakness，在今天的美国社会已不是一个问题。有感于很多国人对精神卫生的漠视，所以希望看到越来越多相关的中文书籍。
