《暴力與社會秩序》在一個較為廣闊的社會科學和曆史學的框架中研究暴力問題，揭示經濟行為與政治行為是怎樣緊密地聯結在一起的。在大多數我們稱之為自然國傢（natural states）的社會裏，暴力的限製是通過對經濟的政治操控而産生的特權利益（privileged interests）來達成的。特權使暴力不至於被強勢的個人濫用，但這麼做無疑又會阻礙經濟和政治的發展。反之，現代社會則是通過開放經濟與政治組織的權利，培育政治與經濟的競爭，來限製暴力的。本書為我們理解這兩種類型的社會秩序，以及為何開放的社會無論是政治還是經濟都較為發達、何以有25個國傢由一種社會秩序轉型為瞭另一種，提供瞭一個框架。

评分13/7/15 讀畢，信息量大、有曆史學功底，但是整本書傳達齣來的信息還需要我進一步消化吸收。比《國傢為什麼失敗》更精緻、更富有建設性。仍然過分簡化瞭復雜的曆史現實。有一種單調而貧瘠的類型學，而缺乏更進一步的譜係學。仿佛隻存在一條自然國傢I-自然國傢II-自然國傢III-開放國傢的單獨係譜。
