“自然”是卢梭政治哲学的基础。然而,不论是在《论不平等》还是在《爱弥儿》中,卢梭阐释自然这一概念时,他都把剥去“社会性”的因素剩下的部分称之为“自然”,这使得“自然”这个概念不甚明了。自然状态是卢梭的一种设想,并非历史时期。《论不平等》卢梭给我们展示了他对于自然状态及自然人的构想,在《爱弥儿》他试图提供一种教育,使得人即使生活在社会中也能够尽可能地接近“自然”,像自然人一样生活。自然与社会的冲突是卢梭政治哲学的出发点。
