必读但无聊（主要是例子不熟悉、毫无亲切感），几页可以讲明白的事，写了一本书。翻译即改写，既促进又抑制创新，因为它必定受到意识形态、诗学观念、赞助人/机构、域论（原作地位、文化里的自我形象、文体、遣词造句、目标读者、译语文化里可接受的文字）、语言（语音、语素、语义、语境）等的影响。决定一部作品能否存活下来，不太在于其内在价值，而在于是否不断被改写。除了翻译外，原作本身也处在改写中，包括历史编纂、文选、批评、以及编辑。前半部分的例子基本是如何使原作被译作文化接受（把握猥亵语的接受度，不触犯政治正确/诗学正确，类比已有的意象、文体等）；后部分的则是作者作品存活或死亡的影响因素，变化过程，厉害的像斯塔尔夫人，家族有能力直接操控、建构评论。
